Angela began her career working as a hospital physiotherapist. She was privileged to work with patients facing a wide variety of acute and chronic health challenges and eventually went on to complete her MSc in paediatric therapy and advanced neuro-developmental therapy in 2001. Her professional experience as a physiotherapist includes heading up a department in both a tertiary hospital and disabled school setting as well as training and supervising under- and postgraduate physiotherapy students in her capacity as an honorary lecturer for the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2000 Angela was diagnosed with an auto-immune muscle disease. Her declining physical strength meant that she was sadly unable to continue in her very physical career and needed to take time out to concentrate on her own healing.
Having spent much time in a hospital both as a professional and as a patient, Angela has become increasingly convinced of the important link between the mind and the body. Maintaining a positive psyche when one is facing challenges, can be very difficult, but it is vital for the healing process. It facilitates recovery after illness and helps one to maintain a good quality of life despite challenges. It was this observation that lead her to further her post-graduate studies in Psychology. She completed her BA Honours in Counselling Psychology cum laude through UNISA in 2015 and went on to her professional training, completing her BPsych Honours (equivalent) with distinction through the Cornerstone Institute in July 2017. Her wealth of professional and personal experience has moulded her into a well-rounded professional, with a real passion for client, child and family-centred care.
Angela’s role is one of psycho-education and supportive counselling to assist clients who have been affected by varied life challenges e.g. major acute/chronic illness or disability, bereavement, relationship troubles, work or financial stressors and numerous other. She uses an eclectic approach drawing from a number of theoretical models, those that best suit the client and the problem. She believes that we all have the power within us to succeed and be happy but that when we face life challenges we sometimes need a little assistance to change our surviving to thriving. This is where counselling is helpful. Angela works collaboratively with her clients to help them turn their stumbling blocks into stepping stones and to restore balance to their lives. She offers personal growth workshops, family, couple and individual counselling sessions and is also interested in offering a variety of different training workshops and group counselling.
The amalgamation of Angela’s qualifications, work and personal experience make her ideally placed to support patients and their families as they negotiate their own journey with illness and disability.
Angela’s is also interested in helping clients throughout the lifespan. She recognizes that the transitional life periods such as the progression from adolescence to young adult and late adulthood to retirement can be particularly difficult and stressful ones. She really enjoys assisting both young and old and helping them to negotiate these challenging periods.
Another of Angela’s passions is working with troubled children and youth. Her wealth of experience working with children and her expert knowledge of child development, helps her to establish easy bonds and strong, therapeutic relationships with her young clients. She makes use of play and art in her sessions and is passionate about helping children and youth to reach their full potential.
Angela holds dual registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a registered counsellor and as a physiotherapist. She is a member of ARCSA and an honorary life member of SANDTA. She would like to invite you on a journey of self-discovery.
