About Dr Ashleigh Ryan
Journey to “The Family Doctor” Practice – Embrace Health Centre
Dr Ashleigh Ryan grew up in Johannesburg and moved to Grahamstown to study at Rhodes University in 1998 where she completed a Bachelor of Science with Biochemistry Honours. Aside from a degree, she also picked up a husband, Daniel, and they moved to London for a spell before settling in Sydney in 2004. After several years working in breast cancer and diabetes research at the Garvan Institute, Dr Ryan decided she would prefer treating people rather than test tubes and embarked on a medical degree at the University of Notre Dame. After obtaining her MBChB in 2012, Dr Ryan completed her internship at St George Hospital in Sydney and gained general registration with the Australian Medical Board. The arrival of a daughter, Lyra, soon thereafter precipitated a move home to South Africa.
Back in Cape Town the Ryans welcomed second child, Harry, into their lives and Dr Ryan completed her community service at Red Cross Children’s Hospital. During this time she developed a special interest in paediatric medicine and obtained a postgraduate Diploma in Child Health. Dr Ryan continued in public service at the Vanguard Community Health Centre where she established a specialist clinic caring for children with chronic allergies. She still attends here on a regular basis as well as maintaining a sessional position at Red Cross.
Dr Ryan joined the Cedars (Our Family GP) in January 2019 where she particularly enjoys the unhurried and caring approach to patient care.
Dr Ryan lives locally and when she isn’t working or practising yoga can be found in the outdoors with her family.
