About Gill Smit – Registered Counsellor
Contact number: 083 677 1284
I am a counsellor working in the medical and private domains.
Based on my mix of training and experiences, one of my special interests is in helping people with medical conditions to manage and deal with their concerns, anxieties and fears. For example, I frequently work closely with Haematology (blood cancer) patients, helping them and their families deal with treatment, hospitalisation and isolation. I have also seen other patients in hospital with various conditions to help them manage where they are and why.
Outside of the hospital environment, I have seen numerous individuals, couples, families and allied medical professionals. Their issues have spanned areas dealing with:
- life stage changes
- anxiety and stress
- end of life fears
- elderly and aging
I am an HPCSA and BHF registered Radiographer and a Council for Counsellors registered counsellor. I have an Undergraduate degree in Psychology from UCT (University of Cape Town); an Honours Degree in Psychology from UNISA (University of South Africa); a Graduate Diploma in Counselling from SACAP (South African College of Applied Psychology) and have worked as a counsellor for over 9 years and as a Radiographer for over 17 years.
I have been involved in PACE – Prevent Arrhythmic Cardiac Events, helping patients and their families cope with the physical, emotional and cognitive effects of implanted defibrillators and pacemakers.
I work from a Person-Centred focus with an eclectic mix of Narrative, Cognitive-Behavioural and Solution Focused. Most important for me is that everyone’s needs are different, and my goal is to help you to find the answers you are seeking. I look at the whole person as there are myriad facets to our existence – mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, social, familial and many more. I am happy to talk about any area of your life that you would like to discuss or resolve.
The space will be yours. It will be safe, considerate, confidential, non-judgemental and warm.
